Sumatran tigers do not have a mating season. they can breed at any time. The pregnancy period of the Sumatran Tiger is around 103 days. In general, tigers will give birth to 2 or 3 cubs. At birth cubs cannot see because their eyes are closed. New cubs' eyes open on the tenth day of their birth day. Sumatran tiger cubs only drink the mother's milk for 8 weeks. However, at the age of 5 or 6 months they can eat solid foods such as meat and insects. Sumatran tiger cubs first leave their nests at the age of 2 weeks. They learn to hunt at the age of 6 months and can only hunt alone at the age of 18 months. At the age of 2 years tiger cubs can start living alone in the wild. Sumatran tigers can survive for 15 years in the wild, and 20 years in cages.
Sumatran tigers in their natural habitat eat medium-sized mammals such as deer, wild boars, also small mammals such as monkeys, birds, reptiles that they encounter in the forest. In between their fingers there is a membrane that makes them able to swim quickly. Sumatran tigers always corner their prey into the water, especially hunted animals that are slow to swim. This is done to make it easier for them to catch their prey.
Sumatran tigers can live anywhere, from lowland forests to mountain forests. Sumatran tiger population in the wild are threatened. They lost their natural habitat due to forest clearing for agricultural land. Sumatran tigers are also widely hunted by humans for their skins. The skins can be used as raw material for making clothes and bags.
