This novel with a background in the Minang land is a requirement for customs and religious regulations that are interrelated with one another. It is told of a young man named Faisal, the son of the Sutan Syarif couple from the Minang tribe and Aminah from the Malay tribe. He had to fight hard to fight for his identity because his ethnicity was not recognized as a son of Minang, because he was born from a Malay-born mother. There is also the figure of Haji Mahmud, a Koran teacher who is full of wisdom in spreading Islam. In addition there is Datuak Naro, the uncle of Sutan Syarif who is selfish in character, always wants to be obeyed, forced the will. In addition there is Husin who really hates Faisal.

In this novel the conflicts that occur between customs and religion are often related to conflicts that often occur between characters. The story begins with Faisal always getting insulted from Husin for not being recognized as a Minang tribe.

Story Piece : "Buya, actually I don't want to complain. Because, God does not like a complainer. But ... I don't know what else to do with Husin. " The young man looked down again.

The author also tells a story in the past where Sutan Syarif was forced to remarry Rohana by Datuak Naro after Aminah left Sutan Syarif and Faisal because her marriage was not approved by Datuak Naro on the grounds that Aminah was not of Minang ethnicity.

Piece of Story: ' And all that was enough for him as the final blow, before he decided to leave quietly. Leaving the realm of Minang which he loved so much, even though he was not from there. Yes, finally he had to go far. Leaving baby and mooring soul. Two figures who have always filled their dreams for the past ten years'

Datuak Naro also supports the PKI's entry into Piliang and Ambacang with Datuk Ameh, Husin, Haji Burhan who are traditional leaders. Shortly afterwards there was a PKI rebellion against the Dutch. Many prominent Minang clerics were captured and exiled to Boven Digul's place including Datuk Naro and Datuk Ameh. News of the uprising also reached the ears of Faisal who was studying at the place of Shaykh Hakim.

Story fragment : "Buya! Buya! "A shocking cry from the entire mosque. Zainal who came half running, immediately jumped up on the mosque . " What's wrong Zainal? It's like being chased by a ghost, "said Shaykh Hakim in surprise ." That's bad , Buya! In Silungkang there had been a great riot ! People from Bukittinggi said, the PKI was conducting a rebellion there against the Dutch! " Zainal reported panting.

The next story is the unexpected meeting between Sutan Syarif, Aminah and Faisal at the Pitapang site.

Story fragment : What he later witnessed was the stunned woman staring at Faisal and he seemed to not believe it when he saw the woman suddenly scattered hugging her son. Sutan Syarif was truly stunned. Without feeling his eyes spread to heat up. All like a dream for him.

After that, holding a Malakok ceremony as a way to be recognized as a Minang. Faisal wholeheartedly attended the ceremony, and he can now be recognized as the son of Minang.

This book has technical advantages such as a cover with illustrations of Minang people so that it can attract readers. It also contains a lot of Islamic values that are still valid today. The author also inserts metaphorical forms to support the atmosphere of the story. There are many Minang languages such as Abak, Buya because they have Minang background so that they can add to the reader's vocabulary.

I also find the shortcomings of this book where the conflict presented tends to be just that, namely looking for Aminah, not Minang ethnic, PKI rebellion, so that the impression is flat and the reader is less visible in emotions and interpretations.

Apart from these weaknesses, this book is worth reading by young people because it contains advice to not give up in reaching all what is desired, the use of customary rules and religious rules in daily life. With many affixes of the atmosphere and customs of Minang will add to our insights in knowing the ins and outs of other regions.
