Tangkuban Perahu (Sangkuriang) Folklore Legend

In West Java precisely in Bandung regency there is a very beautiful recreation place that is Mount Tangkuban Perahu. Tangkuban Perahu means an overturned boat. Named as because of its shape resembles an inverted boat. It is said that according to folklore Severyangan Mountain was indeed an upside down boat.

Here is the story.
Thousands of years ago, the land of Parahyangan was led by a king and a queen who only had a princess. The princess named Dayang Sumbi. She is very beautiful and smart, unfortunately she is very spoiled. One day while weaving on the porch of the palace, Dayang Sumbi felt weak and dizzy. He dropped the spun yarn on the floor many times. When his spin fell for the umpteenth time Dayang Sumbi became angry and swore, he would marry whoever would take the spinning. Right after the words of the oath were spoken, a powerful dog named Tumang arrived and handed the spinning to Dayang Sumbi's hand. So inevitably, according to his oath, Dayang Sumbi must marry the dog.

Dayang Sumbi and Tumang lived happily until they were blessed with a child who was a human child but possessed supernatural powers like his father. This child was given the name Sangkuriang. In its infancy , Sangkuring was always accompanied by playing by a dog named Tumang who he knew was only a loyal dog, not as his father. Sangkuriang grew into a handsome and brave young man.

One day Dayang Sumbi told her son to go with his dog to hunt deer for the purpose of a party. After a period of fruitless searching, Sangkuriang felt hopeless, but he did not want to disappoint his mother. So he was very forced to take an arrow and point it at Tumang. Upon arrival at home he handed over Tumang meat to his mother. dayanng Sumbi, who thought the meat was venison, was delighted by the success of her child.

Immediately after the party, Dayang Sumbi remembered Tumang and asked her child where Tumang was. At first Sangkuriang was afraid, but finally he said what had happened to his mother. Dayang Sumbi became very angry, in her anger she hit Sangkuriang until she passed out right on her forehead. For his actions Dayang Sumbi was driven out of the kingdom by his father. Luckily Sangkuriang regained consciousness, but his mother's punch left a very large scar on his forehead. After he grew up, Sangkuriang went wandering to find out the state of the outside world.

A few years later, Sangkuriang met a very beautiful woman. He immediately fell in love with the woman. The woman is her own mother, but they don't recognize each other. Sangkuriang proposed, Dayang Sumbi accepted it gladly. The day before the wedding day, while stroking her fiance's hair, Dayang Sumbi saw a wide scar on Sangkuriang's forehead , finally he realized that he was about to marry his own son. Knowing this, Dayang Sumbi tried to frustrate her marriage. After thinking hard he finally decided to propose marriage terms that could not be granted by Sangkuriang. The conditions are: Sangkuriang must make a dam that can cover the entire hill and then make a boat to go along the dam. All of that must be finished before daybreak.

Sangkuriang starts working. His love for Sangkuriang gave him a strange strength. Not to forget he also uses the power he got from his father to summon the jinn and help him. With mud and soil they stem water from rivers and springs. Shortly before dawn , Sangkuriang cut down a large tree to make a boat. When Dayang Sumbi saw that Sangkuriang was nearing completion of his work, he prayed to the gods to obstruct his son's work and speed up the coming morning.

Roosters crow, the sun rises sooner than usual and Sangkuriang realizes that he has been cheated. With great anger he cursed Dayang Sumbi and kicked his boat that was almost made into the middle of the forest. The boat was there upside down, and formed Mount Tangkuban Perahu (a perched boat). Not far from where there are tree stumps left over from Sangkuriang felling, now we know it as the Bukit Stump. The dam created by Sangkuriang caused the entire hill to be filled with water and formed a lake where Sangkuriang and Dayang Sumbi drowned themselves and are not heard from until now.

So, what do you think about the story above? it's good, is not it. therefore we must always preserve the culture in our beloved Indonesia. comment and share suggestions for me so that this blog can build properly. thank you
